Turn your shows into events

I’m currently working with an artist who’s been slowly building up his email database and working towards some goals for both building a sustainable income and marketing his upcoming CD release.

Things have been progressively growing, but the main thing i’ve been really pushing him to do, and which has been challenging has been trying to guide his thinking into setting clear and specific targets to work on and improve upon.

One of which, has been to build up his fan-base and email list.

Now, im a musician, so i understand the creative mentality, and sometimes rigid opposition AGAINST “goal-setting,” and thinking about the business and marketing end of things.

Never Stop Being The Learner

You know i sometimes find myself getting caught up in an ego-centric battle of how much more i know than someone, or how i must have ALL the answers, or how much knowledge i have, or how superior my intelligence is to that of a mere mortal, rah rah rah…

I’m not going to lie, lots of people do lot’s of dumb things. But it’s not about how much any of us knows… It’s the simple stance of saying hey, i’m open to seeing and understanding different viewpoints, i’m suspending my need to find what or why i’m right, i’m letting go of the possible fear that by not being the EXPERT i am inviting possible defeat, possible judgement…  By readopting this attitude of being “the learner,” that i had grown accustomed to which easily gets lost in the world of business and cynicism and negativity and difficult people… Just seems that makes everything peaceful again.

Promotional Partners

Aside from knowing and meeting the needs of an audience, and providing them value, one of the most important tools in building your online presence is the effective utilization of promo partners.

Whether you are launching a product, marketing a new article series, or trying to build your list, the power of promo partners can amplify your efforts and maximize your return on investment.

When I talk about promo partners I’m referring to a coordinated group, or list of people with a similar audience who all work with each other to drive traffic to each others pages.

Music Marketing and DIY Independent Artist Strategies with Seth Godin

Having been a big fan of Seth Godin for years now, anytime he talks, I listen… If you are an artist, songwriter, musician, and you don’t know about Seth yet, go learn. Read Tribes and Linchpin, or any other of his 13 books… And go from there. He’s a marketing legend with a unique attitude and stance on artistry and passion as a key commodity and value driver of the new economy.

Anyway, in a recent podcast with Seth Godin discusses some of the important concepts for independent artists to understand – moving forward in the new music business. I agree with just about all of them. I figured it would be useful to outline the key points, at least for those of you who are still a little behind on the new indie artist model concepts.
