There is no “six step system” for how to write a melody…

Songwriting, or writing songs and creating melody – is about doing two main things.

Telling a story to your listeners in a way that creates an emotional experience, and crafting the chords, groove, and melody to deliver and effectively enhance that message.

Melody, in every genre of music, is the bedrock, and probably the single most important factor in what people would call a “great song.” Whether it’s a timeless classic, or a mind numbing “flavor of the month” pop-hit, MELODY is what makes a song MEMORABLE.

Sometimes writing songs is a free flowing – instant process… The muse takes over and you just channel and capture. It’s best to just let go and keep putting pen to paper.

But there are those other times, and those are times we are all familiar with. Any songwriter knows what its like to meddle indecisively for hours at a time to try to get the line or section right.

For anyone in a rut, remember, back to BASICS…

Get the concept clear, don’t linger over saying the line the perfect way the first time… Don’t worry, songwriting is more about rewriting than it is about writing. At first, just write out each section with the lines that as simply and directly as possible, tell the story.

Writing songs in the new music business means we need to include more pieces into our initial thought processes & arsenal of songwriting techniques.

Although it is important that we are clear on the concept and able to write good songs, i introduce a new parameter into our initial thought processes and preproduction stage.

I’m talking about the marketing end… it just has to be included. there are just too many places you can take a song, and to not have an idea of where this song could go, and where it would be best suited, is just no longer acceptable if we want to make a living these days doing what we love.
